How to Build Your Confidence to Lead Authentically by Emily Petty

When I first stepped up to become a senior leader, I made a few mistakes. The first was not investing in my own personal development. I thought that to be a good leader I had to be there for my team, and if I kept working harder I would be successful. The second, I didn’t find a network of leaders to whom I could go for support.

I now know that to be a successful leader, you always need to be learning and growing. It is a journey. You can know the theory and tools, but the continual process of reflecting, coaching and learning helps you to develop as a leader. That is why I am a chair of one of ella’s Emerging Leaders forums. I believe that the next generation of leaders needs to be equipped and supported for the journey ahead. By having peer support each month, you can keep nurturing, reflecting and learning through coaching others and being coached at the same time.

I also run a 3-month online coaching programme for leaders who have recently been promoted to a leadership role. This is sort of a kick start, or reset, to help you as a leader lay strong foundations. A group of up to 12 leaders meets weekly over 3 months and receives weekly challenges. There is online content to work through at your own pace and you have access to it for 12 months. You will be part of a private Facebook group where you can share challenges and update the group on your progress.

If you or you know of leaders who need a confidence boost to start on the right footing for success, check out ella and its Emerging Leaders Forum. We are holding a complementary taster session on Wednesday 24 March at 10:00-12:00. Please click here to register.
